Alvarez Holds Three Offers

April 29, 2009 by Luke Stampini

One of the better all around athlete in South Florida for 2010 has to be Belen Jesuit’s Pablo Alvarez. At 6-foot-3, 180-pounds Alvarez has ripped off impressive times on the track this spring including a 14.16 second 110m hurdles, a 50.88 second 400m, a 37.26 second 300m hurdles, and a 22.01 second 200m.

Alvarez can also play some football playing cornerback and wide receiver for the Wolverines. The athletic Alvarez has offers from Northwestern, Iowa, and Colorado State so far, with Duke and Boston College the two schools that seem closest to being the next offers. Alvarez was also visited at his school by an assistant coach from the University of Florida.

Alvarez feels Northwestern is recruiting him the hardest, where defensive line coach Marty Long his handling his recruitment. Alvarez recently made the trip to the Evanston, Illinois campus, just north of the Chicago city limits.

“They invited me up for junior day, and I got to hang out with the players, see the school and what not,” explained Alvarez. “They really impressed me. They were very nice, very welcoming. I loved it. I loved the city. I loved Chicago and I can definitely see myself there.”

The main question surrounding Alvarez is what position he is going to play once in college.

“Duke is primarily recruiting me as a wide receiver, but Northwestern wants me to play corner. I believe Colorado State wants me to play outside linebacker.”

To play the outside linebacker he certainly is going to have to add more weight to his frame. Alvarez does not feel adding the necessary weight will be a problem.

“My dad’s a big guy so I think I have the frame to put on 40 pounds or 30 pounds if they want me to do that,” said Alvarez. “Hopefully while maintaining my speed.”

That speed along with his height and ball skills are what Alvarez feels separates him from other prospects. He also already has his mind set on adding the weight necessary to take the rigors of college football.

“I want to work in the weight room and get bigger. I think if I came into whatever school I decide to play at around 6′3″, 200-pounds, I could play whatever position they want me at.”

Alvarez recently strained an adductor muscle which will keep him from hurdles for a few weeks. He still plans on running the 4×100 at state, and does not see himself missing any spring football due to the injury. Belen Jesuit faces Dr. Krop May 22nd at home in their spring game.
