D1 Quarterback Skills Academy
April 19, 2009 by Luke Stampini
Saturday at Calvary Christian Academy quarterback coach Doug Socha welcomed 33 quarterbacks to his D1 Quarterback Skills Academy. The main goal of the camp according to Socha is to get the prospects excited for spring football which is just around the corner. Socha also went on to say this camp was not for beginners and would cover a wide range of fundamentals at a high intensity tempo. The camp ended with one-on-ones and quarterback challenge.
The winner of the quarterback challenge was Pompano Ely quarterback Mike German. Boynton Beach’s Isaiah Howard finished second with Stephen Morris of Monsignor Pace, Nick Becker of Pine Crest, and Marshyl Rothman of Jupiter Christian all tying for third place.
Socha shared his thoughts on a few of the 2010 quarterbacks in attendance Saturday.
Stephen Morris (pictured) 6′2″ 180 Monsignor Pace: “He was the strongest armed kid there and runs a 4.5 (forty). He can make up for a lot of things running a 4.5.”
Mike German 6′1″ 190 Pompano Ely: “He’s got good size. He’s got tremendous arm strength. He’s got some things he’s got to work on and get cleaned up, but he’s got that arm strength and size. He was really a pleasant kid to be around.”
Chris Rapka 6′2″ 200 Cardinal Gibbons: “He definitely has the size and will pass the test when he walks into a room at 6′2″ minimum. . . Good footwork and he’s worked really hard at developing that. The thing is he can make the drops and make every throw on the field, now he has to go do it on the field. He’s a pocket guy, but he throws the ball on the run pretty well. He’s not a guy that will beat you with his feet. I know he runs well enough to get himself out of trouble.”
Nick Becker 6′1″ 190 Pine Crest: “Very strong arm, probably on of the strongest arms in the camp. Good footwork, has pretty good junior film, and has really worked hard this off-season. He really fits the mold of a drop back guy. He’s similar to Rapka.”
Marshyl Rothman 5′8″ 165 Jupiter Christian: “He really can make every throw on the field. He just got to fight the height. He will go throw for throw with guys. He’s pretty good.”
Raymond Berhane 6′1″ 170 Everglades: “He really made some nice throws today. He’s a guy I knew nothing about before today. He did a great job, got a live arm, made some nice throws and is really competitive.”
Young Guns to Watch:
6-foot-2, 190-pound 2011 quarterback Tyler Bergman had an impressive day as well. Bergman recently transferred from Wellington to Palm Beach Gardens.
Keep an eye on Westminster Christian 7th grader Hunter Boyett. Only 5-foot-10, 160-pounds currently, Boyett is a very advanced quarterback for being so young.
