Dwyer’s Hunter Making a Name
January 26, 2010 by Luke Stampini
When you are on a team with some of the top players in the nation for the 2010 and 2011 class, it certainly can be easy to get lost in the shuffle a bit. Not many will recognize the name Darrell Hunter when talking about the long list of stars up and down the Dwyer football roster, but do not sleep on Hunter’s talents. The 5-foot-10, 165-pound cornerback lined up opposite current Florida Gator early enrollee Robert Clark, and proved tough to shake when in coverage.
“I think my strengths are my footwork and getting physical with the wide receiver,” explained Hunter.
His physical play with wide receivers also translated well into being a sure tackler on run support this past fall. All of those characteristics he displayed at corner have led to him getting some attention from colleges.
“My letters are from Nebraska, Missouri, Michigan State, and Iowa State and Central Florida and that’s about it.”
When it comes time for Hunter to make a decision on a college, he already a few criteria he wants met in mind.
“I want to look at the schools academics, facilities the school has, I don’t really look too much into coaching, mainly the school and academics.”
Sunday Hunter took part in the SoFLAfootball 7-on-7 Showcase, which featured some of the top players from Palm Beach, Broward and Dade Counties. The event featured a receiving corps that would challenge any defensive back featuring Kelvin Benjamin of Glades Central, Ezekiel Turner of Delray Beach Atlantic, Tommy Shuler of Miami Central, and Hunter’s teammate at Dwyer, Nick O’Leary.
“I liked the event. It gave me a chance to go against new competition and showed what I need to work on. I liked going against Kelvin Benjamin a lot and Nick O’Leary. Those bigger receivers that I’m going against this year, and Kelvin Benjamin gave me a chance to see what he does.”
Hunter also expanded on what exactly he feels he needs to work on over the offseason.
“I want to get more explosive, so if I do intercept the ball I can just take off. I want to get my upper body strength better too.”
