Matulis Pulls in Two Offers
February 24, 2010 by Luke Stampini
Possibly the best looking offensive lineman physically in South Florida for the 2011 class resides at Park Vista with Mike Matulis. Measuring in at 6-foot-6, 270-pounds, Matulis has the frame of a major offensive tackle.
“I got a big body and I just like to move people out of the way,” said Matulis on his skill set. “I got stuff to work on like everyone else does, but I think that I got a good down block and we have great coach.”
That frame along with the skills Matulis displayed on the field this past season landed him a pair of offers over the weekend. Matulis took a road trip to visit three universities.
“I went to UCF on Thursday, then Mississippi State Friday and Vanderbilt Saturday,” said Matulis.
Of those three, UCF and Vanderbilt extended offers to the big offensive tackle. Matulis broke down each visit.
UCF: “I saw it had a nice indoor facility, it was a very nice campus, everything is right next to each other in a centrally located area, and you know it’s a good school. They said that I’m high up on their recruiting board, and that they like my tapes and they like me and that they were going to offer. UCF I think is a very good up and coming program.”
Mississippi State: “I like it a lot too, unfortunately they didn’t offer, but it’s a good school. They showed me a lot of nice stuff too. It was good. They had this board that I’m on and in the spring after the dead period, they would come to a spring practice or something like that.”
Vanderbilt: “It was in a good area, and the campus was just beautiful, it’s a very nice campus. They also have nice facilities, the turf field and weight room was nice. It’s a good school, they’re a very good academic school.
“The (head) coach (Bobby Johnson) pulled me aside and said they were going to offer me and that they liked everything that they saw and the like me and to keep everything I was doing up.”
UCF and Vanderbilt were the first offers for Matulis, who was thrilled to land those offers, but feels they are just the beginning.
“It feels good, they are both very great schools, and I’m excited about them both,” said Matulis. “I’m just probably going to wait it out a little bit and see what’s going on before I make any decisions. I think there’s more (offers) to come.”
When it is time for Matulis to make that decision, he has an understanding of what he is looking for.
“You know good people, good coaches, good players, just a good atmosphere,” said Matulis of the program he picks. “I know when I like the college, when I go there and I just absolutely feel it, every bone in my body wants me to go to them you know.”
Matulis is working out at Athletes Advantage in Wellington this offseason in hopes of improving his athleticism even more heading into next season.
