Dillard cornerback Allen Ramsey recently landed his first offer from the Univeristy of Maryland. The lanky 6-foot 2011 prospect talked to SoFLAfootball about landing the coveted first offer and the Terrapins.

“It’s a good feeling knowing people have been noticing the way I play,” said Ramsey. “An offer to a major D-I school, that’s amazing. I’m just so excited.”

Earlier this week, Ramsey spoke over the phone to Maryland defensive coordinator Don Brown, who extended to offer from the Terps. It seems as if the Maryland coaching staff likes the prospects of having a taller, more physical cornerback on the outside.

“He said that he liked my film and was like ‘do you like to play physical in the jam up close?’ I was like yes,” explained Ramsey of his conversation with Coach Brown.

Ramsey also gave the indication that being the first to offer will carry some weight with him, when it comes time to take official visits.

“I’m thinking about an official because they were the first to offer.”

This weekend Ramsey will be traveling to the campus of USF to take part in the Badger Sport Elite 7-on-7. Ramsey talked about the trip and the opportunity to compete against some of the best in the state of Florida.

“I’m going on a team with some of the best of South Florida’s players and plan to win the whole thing,” said Ramsey. “I just want to show that I’m one of the best in the nation at what I do.”

One of the more perplexing prospects in South Florida is Miami Central’s Miles Pace. At 6-foot-1, 235-pounds Pace’s size is more suited for an inside linebacker, but he saw very few snaps at the position as a junior for the Rockets. It was on the interior of the defensive line where Pace caused most of his havoc, overpowering offensive linemen on his way to the backfield.

“I’ve been getting letters from Clemson, Iowa, and Florida State,” said Pace of the schools that have shown him the most interest.

Despite playing mostly with his hand in the dirt this fall, Pace says the colleges are looking to stand him up.

“They want me at middle linebacker,” said Pace. “I would play D-line if I’m big enough. If I do I would go to D-end or something.”

Pace says he plans to play both linebacker and defensive tackle again this fall. No matter the position Pace eventually plays, there is no denying the fact he makes numerous plays on the field. While Pace still wants to improve his speed this offseason, he discussed his strengths as a player.

“Some of my strengths are getting into the backfield, getting off the block, shedding blocks, making tackles in the backfield, and getting after the quarterback. If I have to go into coverage, I will drop into coverage sometimes.”

The Rockets lost to eventual 6A State Champion Miramar, after finally getting past district foe and playoff nemesis Miami Northwestern earlier in the playoffs. As a senior Pace wants to finish the playoff run with a victory in Orlando, as well as adding to his own personal accolades.

“My personal goal is to make All-Dade and All-American,” said Pace. “My team goal is a state championship.”

Boyd Anderson linebacker Kent Turene has seen the interest from college coaches slowly pick up steam the past several weeks. The 6-foot-2, 220-pounder has been collecting offers on a regular basis with two more coming this week.

“I’ve been offered by FIU, FAU, Illinois, Nebraska, Minnesota, and just been recently offered by Texas A&M,” said Turene.

The offer from the Aggies came Thursday afternoon.

“Today, I talked to (defensive line coach) Terrell Williams,” explained Turene. “He told me he’s going to be recruiting me, he’s excited about me and he just sent the offer today.”

Turene continued on the Texas A&M program.

“My thoughts on Texas A&M are that they have tradition, also they’re in the Big 12, they play a lot of big schools, and they sound like they have a young and upcoming team.”

Wednesday the Minnesota Golden Gophers extended an offer to the talented inside linebacker. Turene talked about what coaches told him about the program.

“Minnesota, it seems like a good school. I talked to (linebacker) Coach (John) Butler and the running back coach (Thomas Hammock). They talked about the program and what they are trying to do. They are trying to build the defense and trying to be an up and coming program to be one of the top teams in the Big 10.”

Even with the offers Turene has in hand currently, there are several heavy hitters keeping the lines of communication open with the 2011 prospect.

“I hear from Florida Coach (Zach) Azzanni, also hear from Coach (Eddie) Gran from Florida State. I hear from Ole Miss Coach (Chris) Vaughn, also hear from coach at Miami, Coach (Jeff) Stoutland. I hear from Michigan, Coach (Greg) Robinson the defensive coordinator, that’s about it.”

Turene recently visited a spring practice for Miami and plans to take in a spring practice at Florida next month.

McArthur safety Steven Montgomery recently landed his first offer earlier this week. The 5-foot-10, 185-pound defensive back was tendered by Maryland Wednesday, and the offer caught Montgomery off guard a bit.

“Actually it came as a surprise, because Tuesday I came to my coach and was like lets call Maryland, I like them,” explained Montgomery. “I like the program and stuff. We called and no coaches picked up, but then the next day Coach (Don) Brown called me and wanted to offer me. They liked my tape and I’m already qualified.”

The offer from the Terrapins was one Montgomery was thrilled to land.

“It’s the ACC,” said Montgomery. “I want to play in the ACC or the SEC, it’s a great conference. That is a great offer for me, I’m real excited about that.”

Several other schools have been in contact with Montgomery, but he states he is only talking to coaches from a few schools.

“The coaches that I really keep in contact with the most are Florida State, Florida, UCF, Wisconsin, Michigan, and like a few other schools. I like Georgia Tech a lot, Cincinnati, and UCF and USF.”

On the field, Montgomery makes his fair share of plays from his strong safety position. At the next level, he feels he can play cornerback as well.

“One thing I can say about me is I can play both positions,” said Montgomery. “I think I can play corner and safety, that’s a plus. I love to hit, I love to get my nose dirty coming up in the box, I love blitzing. You know anywhere my team needs me to play.”

Montgomery recently attended the Davie Under Armour Combine where he ran a 4.56 second forty. His speed and footwork are two aspects of his came he hopes to improve this offseason. The hard work this offseason will help Montgomery attain his goals for the upcoming fall season.

“I want to make it to the playoffs this year. I want to make all-state. I want to have like 7 picks and I want to have 7 sacks too.”

Montgomery recently visited Florida State for their junior day and plans to attend a Florida spring practice.

There was much attention given to the St. Thomas Aquinas secondary last season and for good reason. The Raiders sent five players that saw time in the secondary last season on to the next level with Cody Riggs to Florida, Lamarcus Joyner to Florida State, Keion Payne to Miami, Brian Robinson to Marshall, and Reynaldo Kirton to Harvard. The only junior to see significant time in the loaded secondary was 6-foot, 175-pound Marcus Roberson.

It looks like the 2011 prospect will garner similar attention to his 2010 teammates, as Roberson claims to be in contact with Miami, Oklahoma State, and Texas A&M. Wednesday night Roberson spoke over the phone to Aggie assistant Terrell Williams.

“He just said that I got an offer,” said Roberson on the phone conversation the Texas A&M coach. “I know they are in the Big 12 and their defense is a cover 2 and 4, mostly a passing defense. Their facilities and things are nice.”

This was Roberson’s first offer, but wants to use this as fuel to land even more offers.

“I feel good (about the first offer), but I’m looking forward to more,” explained Roberson. “It just motivates me to get more.”

Last season Roberson lined up at safety for the Raiders and plans to once again play safety his senior season. He feels Texas A&M wants him to play cornerback. Despite the position Roberson plays, he feels he is able to contribute.

“I’m really a ball hawk and I have the ability to come up and make plays,” said Roberson. “I want to work on playing off and playing more man instead of zone.”

Next fall, Roberson’s personal goal is show off those ball hawking skills even more.

“I want to get more interceptions than I did last year, I only had two last year, but I’m going to try to get six this year.”
