Ash’s Recruitment Heats Up

March 4, 2009 by Luke Stampini

Pahokee defensive tackle Richard Ash is a prospect that has seen his stock sore in the past several months. The 6-foot-4, 245-pound Ash was a reserve lineman for Pahokee until midway through the season when he had a break out game against Byrnes (SC). After his performance on national television Ash continued his solid play and capped off his season with a stellar performance in the State championship game.

“Only FIU and West Virginia are my only two offers, but Florida and Ole Miss are showing at lot of interest of late,” said Ash.

Ash is still a ways off from reaching his full potential physically, but his long arms, nice frame, and athletic ability are having coaches take notice. He recently made his first visit to Gainesville to attend the Florida-Tennessee basketball game, while getting to meet some of the football staff for the Gators.

“We only really saw what the stadium was like, the inside of the stadium and stuff. I liked it. It really got my hopes up. We talked to Urban Meyer and Coach Billy Gonzalez. Urban said he liked the players from the Muck and he was really going to keep an eye on our team.”

The day before, Ash and fellow Pahokee teammates took in the campus of UCF.

“I like the weight program they got, liked how their fields were set up,” said Ash of the Golden Knights. “They took on a tour of the campus and we saw the dorms.”

Ole Miss defensive line coach Terry Price and former Muck star JaJuan Seider, now a grad assistant at West Virginia, are trying to persuade Ash in making other trips.

“The guy from Ole Miss wants me to come visit their campus and the one from West Virginia too.”

Right now Ash is focused on getting ready for spring football, as he knows a lot of eyes will how he continues to develop as a player.

“They [colleges] plan on checking me out in the spring, I just have to make plays.”
