Colleges Recruiting in SoFLA
February 4, 2010 by Luke Stampini
Below are how the schools ranked in their efforts recruiting South Florida taking into consideration the location of their campus, state of their football program, and what conference they play in.
Florida Gators
Matt Elam Dwyer S
Chris Dunkley Pahokee WR
Lynden Trail BTW DE
Gerald Christian Dwyer TE
Quinton Dunbar BTW WR
Robert Clark Dwyer ATH
Darrin Kitchens Homestead LB
Cody Riggs STA CB
Gideon Ajagbe Ransom Everglades LB
The Gators were the kings of the recruiting trail in South Florida. They were able to help fill a void in their receiving corps by landing the talented Chris Dunkley and Quinton Dunbar, a player with a ton of upside. Landing the trio from Dwyer not only added three talented players, but also laid the groundwork for 2011 in that same talent rich school. The Gators also stuck to their MO by taking elite level athletes in hopes of grooming them to be elite level football players with Gideon Ajagbe and Darrin Kitchens. The player that may sting opponents the most down the road is “he’s too skinny” Lynden Trail. UF is a program that has proven the ability to add bulk to athletes, and players that can get after the quarterback are always in high demand. Trail is of slight build and his technique is raw, but he knows how to get after the quarterback.

UCF Knights
Torrian Wilson Northwestern OL
Jeff Godfrey Miami Central QB
Josh Reese Miami Central WR
Zach Soto Monsignor Pace OL
Justin McCray Southridge OL
Perry Meiklejohn Westminster Christian OL
LeBranden Richardson Miami Central DE
Woodley Cadet Seminole Ridge S
Jordan McCray Southridge OL
Jose Jose Miami Central OL
Jamar McClain Miami Central CB
The Knights came down and caused a major racket in South Florida. They pillaged a talented Miami Central squad headlined by Jeff Godfrey and Josh Reese. A talented offensive line can mask many deficiencies, and UCF is looking to build a solid unit with SoFLA prospects. Torrian Wilson headlines the group, but Justin McCray and Zach Soto should not be overlooked.

FIU Golden Panthers
Willis Wright Miami Springs QB
Richard Leonard Killian CB
Randy Williams Miami Springs S
Justin Halley Boca Raton S
Khambrel McGee Northwestern CB
Sam Miller LaSalle CB
David Delsoin Sheridan Hills Christian OL
Caleb Vincent Hollywood Hills LB
The Golden Panthers continue to plug away on the South Florida recruiting scene, in particular Dade County, despite the fact they play in the Sun Belt. FIU reeled in a big fish with Willis Wright and one of the most underrated players in the entire state with Richard Leonard. Players like Randy Williams, Khambrel McGee, and Justin Halley should turn into solid contributors as the program continues to grow. The lines are where FIU has struggled in the past, but given time to develop and improve, David Delsoin has the body and athleticism to become an anchor on the offensive line.

Miami Hurricanes
Brandon Linder STA OL
Eduardo Clements BTW RB
Stephen Morris Monsignor Pace QB
Allen Hurns Carol City WR
Clive Walford Glades Central TE
Keion Payne STA OL
Shane McDermott Palm Beach Central OL
Jermaine Barton STA OL
Johnathan Feliciano Western OL
David Perry University DE
Delmar Taylor Miami Beach DT
The Hurricanes just did not rule South Florida like many would suspect. While the Canes landed some solid players that should fit their roles nicely over the course of their careers, the class was lacking that bell cow recruit to hang your hat on. Miami did a good job building depth along the offensive line, headlined by Brandon Linder. A couple of players that may finish their careers by surprising fans are tight end Clive Walford and wide receiver Allen Hurns.
***********************************
Florida State Seminoles
Greg Dent Glades Central ATH
Lamarcus Joyner STA CB
De’Joshua Johnson Pahokee WR
The Seminoles missed on a few SoFLA prospects on signing day that would have really caused a stir in South Florida and shot them up the rankings. Nonetheless, FSU signed a trio of talented players that should contribute early. While defensive back Lamarcus Joyner gets all the headlines, the player that may be getting all the publicity after four years is the multi talented Greg Dent.
***********************************
Michigan Wolverines
Demar Dorsey Boyd Anderson S
Richard Ash Pahokee DT
The Wolverines only signed two players from SoFLA, but those two are capable of earning All-Big Ten honors before their careers are over. On the flip side, there are question marks that surround both Demar Dorsey and Richard Ash giving this haul a ‘Boom or Bust’ feel for Michigan.
***********************************
Ole Miss Rebels
Cliff Coleman Boyd Anderson CB
Ralph Williams Southridge LB
Jeff Scott Archbishop Carroll RB
Tony Grimes Hollywood Hills DB
Delvin Jones Palmetto DE
Quadarias Mireles Delray Beach Atlantic WR
The Rebels pulled in a solid class from South Florida, but the player fans may be sleeping on is cornerback Cliff Coleman. Add the speedy Jeff Scott and the hard-hitting Ralph Williams and Ole Miss hauled in a solid nucleus of players from South Florida.
***********************************
West Virginia Moutaineers
Ivan McCartney Miramar WR
Dante Chambers Miramar WR
Travis Bell Glades Central S
The Mountaineers’ SoFLA haul was not quite as astounding as once thought, but landing Ivan McCartney was still an impressive feat nonetheless. WVU fans should still be more than happy with their catch after adding a pair of solid role players in Dante Chambers and Travis Bell.
***********************************
Marshall Thundering Herd
Jermaine Kelson Southridge ATH
Brian Robinson STA S
Fred Pickett Pahokee WR
Ed Sullivan Boca Raton QB
Mike Fleurizard Dwyer DT
Antwon Chisholm Glades Central RB
Demetrius Evans Glades Central WR
Justin Haig American Heritage Delray K
The Thundering Herd made a splash in South Florida with the sheer number of players they were able to sign, which should only make their recruiting efforts easier in the future. Safety Brian Robinson and wide receiver Fred Pickett are nice additions, but the ultra fast Jermaine Kelson should have fans on the edge of their seats each time he touches the ball.
***********************************
North Carolina Tarheels
Giovanni Bernard STA RB
Jabari Price Pompano Ely CB
The Tarheels inked a pair of solid prospects with running back Giovanni Bernard leading the way. Bernard was a man amongst boys on the field during the spring before nagging hamstring injuries slowed him this fall. Cornerback Jabari Price should help out in the secondary fairly early in his career.
**********************************
Wisconsin Badgers
James White STA RB
Isaiah Williams Monsignor Pace WR
Peniel Jean Palm Beach Central DB
Joe McNamara Cypress Bay OL/DL
The Badgers continue adding South Florida athletes to their squad with a strong 2010 class. James White will fit in perfectly with Wisconsin’s rushing attack and Isaiah Williams was a nice last-minute steal.
***********************************
South Florida Bulls
Todd Chandler Northwestern DT
Hans Louis Chaminade Madonna LB
Tony Kibler Glades Day OL
The Bulls’ SoFLA class was not quite as deep as some may have thought heading in, but they inked some talented players. Defensive tackle Todd Chander will add some quickness to the interior of the defensive line, and linebacker Hans Louis is a great signing day pickup.
**********************************
Louisville Cardinals
Michaelee Harris Northwestern WR
Corvin Lamb Northwestern RB
Jermaine Brooks Palmetto DT
Chris Acosta Hialeah OL
The Cardinals had hopes of a better SoFLA class, but the four signees are enough to make fans excited about re-opening the doors to Dade County for UofL. Michaelee Harris and Corvin Lamb look to make an instant impact on offense and special teams respectively.
***********************************
New Mexico Lobos
Calvin Smith Hialeah DT
Ravonne Carter Hialeah CB
The Lobos sent shock waves across the nation when Calvin Smith picked New Mexico on national television. While Smith is the headline grabber, Ravonne Carter’s versatility to play either safety or corner is yet another good get for the Lobos.
***********************************
Wake Forest Demon Deacons
Antonio Ford Pahokee DT
Zach Allen Pahokee LB
Merrill Noel Pahokee CB
The Demon Deacons set up shop at one of the premier programs in the state of Florida, inking three of their stars. Antonio Ford is already on campus and has to potential to become a star before his career is done.
******************************
Rutgers Scarlet Knights
Gareef Glashen Carol City CB
Djwany Mera South Broward DL
Marcus Thompson Boyd Anderson RB/LB
A school that hit SoFLA hard in the past, looks to be opening things back up again. All three of their signees should be major contributors for the Scarlet Knights before their careers end.
**********************************
Western Michigan Broncos
Johnnie Simon Palm Beach Lakes S
Dareyon Chance Cardinal Gibbons RB
Garrett Smith Cardinal Gibbons CB
Desmond Bozeman Dillard LB
Manual Diaz Hialeah-Miami Lakes DE
The Broncos continued their success in South Florida. Dareyon Chance will impress many fans with his play, but Johnnie Simon has star potential before he is done in Kalamazoo.
**********************************
Texas Tech Red Raiders
Lavaughn Whigham Southridge WR
Shawn Corker Cardinal Gibbons WR
Philip Warren Southridge WR
The Red Raiders had Shawn Corker locked up for some time, but the late addition of Lavaughn Whigham should have fans fired up. Whigham played a multitude of positions and an absolute player that fell through many cracks out of Dade County.
***********************************
Middle Tennessee State Blue Raiders
Morris Moore Palm Beach Lakes DL
Khari Burke South Plantation CB
Chrisitan Henry Hollywood Hills LB
The Blue Raiders added a nice core of players headed by Morris Moore and Khari Burke. Both have the chance to see time early and become All-Sun Belt caliber players.
***********************************
Florida Atlantic Owls
David Lozandier North Miami LB
There is no sugar coating this one, the Owls should be pulling more than one prospect per class from the tri-county area. The Owls seriously dropped the ball in recruiting. Rule number one is take care of your backyard, especially when your backyard happens to be one of the most fertile recruiting grounds in the country. Despite the lack of numbers, David Lozander is an excellent player. There is a good chance he sees the field early in his career at FAU, and becomes a solid contributor.
