David Gilbert Close to Deciding

September 24, 2008 by Luke Stampini

This weekend Northeast’s standout defensive end David Gilbert is heading to Gainesville for an unofficial visit. Gilbert will be watching the Gators take on Ole Miss at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium.

The 6-foot-4, 220-pound Gilbert recently announced Florida and Wisconsin are his final two schools. Florida has yet to send an official offer to the December graduate.

“I’ve been talking to Coach Gonzalez, Coach Mac (Dan McCarney), Coach Myer. They telling me they watched my film and they want to see my senior tape. I’m bringing it up with me.”

So if the Gators pull the trigger this weekend and offer Gilbert would they be in the lead for the pass rusher.

“It would definitely be a close race, but I would probably choose Wisconsin.”

Gilbert’s recruitment at Wisconsin is being handled by Coach Charlie Partridge. Partridge, a South Florida native, stopped by Northeast to speak with Gilbert Friday and then watched the first half of Gilbert’s game verse Coral Ridge. Gilbert is going to visit Wisconsin, but waiting for his father to set a date.

“He’s probably made it and didn’t tell me,” said a laughing Gilbert.

Gilbert also explained the reason why Wisconsin is so high on his list.

“It’s the Big Ten. They play in a conference where my speed will stand out. I’ll be able to get a great education. They are #8 in the nation now.”

Gilbert and Northeast travel to play Dillard Friday night.
