Grooms Making a Name

Kevin Grooms does a little of everything for his South Broward football team. The electric 2011 prospect returns punts and kickoffs, sees action as a running back, and is asked to take on the opposing teams top receiver at his cornerback position.

The 5-foot-10, 165-pound Grooms let Broward County and the rest of South Florida know of the talents he has on the football field Friday against McArthur. Grooms rushed for 127 yards on 18 carries, had a long kickoff return that set up a South Broward score, but saved his best play for the end of the game. Trailing McArthur 26-21, Grooms returned a punt 71 yards for a touchdown with 15 seconds left in the game to give South Broward a 27-26 victory.

“It felt great to get the win and to know that I helped my team get this victory and beat a team they lost to last year to keep them from the playoffs,” said Grooms of his punt return.

Grooms also had a 9-yard touchdown run earlier in the game. South Broward is now 5-0 on the season and Grooms is finding his groove after scoring the go-ahead touchdown and solidified the victory with an interception against Hollywood Hills the week before.

“I feel like the season has been going great so far, and I feel I’m getting better and better as we progress,” said Grooms.

While Grooms is having a nice start to his junior season, he still wants to improve his play as a cornerback.

“Defensive-wise, just covering and reading the quarterback better, just becoming better all around.”

It is early in the recruiting process for Grooms, but he is hearing from a few schools and hopes to hear from more in the future.

“I got a couple letters sent to me from different colleges, Auburn, University of Kentucky, something like that. Schools I’d like to hear from is the University of Miami or UF.”

Grooms and his South Broward teammates next game is against Pembroke Pines Charter Saturday.
