Heritage’s Coby has Offers

Versatile athletes seem to be the norm at American Heritage-Delray, and the next two-way standout for the Stallions appears to be 2011 wide receiver/defensive back Herve Coby. The 6-foot-1, 170-pound Coby has been receiving plenty of interest from colleges, and even has a pair offers in hand already.

“I have two right now, and they’re FIU and West Virginia,” said Coby who is being recruited as a wide receiver at the next level. “Marshall said they were sending it in the mail, but I haven’t gotten that yet. I’ve been hearing from Duke, Vanderbilt, Florida a little bit, Miami of Ohio, Miami, and Auburn.”

Coby’s former American Heritage teammate, Darius Millines, is currently committed to West Virginia. Coby talked how the two challenged each other to get better and the possibility of that happening again in college.

“When they offered me I thought I might be going up there with my homeboy, because every since camp started me and him have been competing and pushing each other in the weight room and everything. If I had the chance to go up there and play with him again, I think we will probably have the same mentality and just try to get better with each other and keep each other’s heads up like the same thing we did in high school.”

Coby’s other offer, FIU, is a school he admits knowing very little about.

“I don’t really know a lot about FIU, but they came on like an educational tour to my school and I went to the thing since they offered me to check it out. It looks like they got a lot of good programs and their football team is pretty good. I heard a lot of people are starting to go there.”

At the receiver position, Coby has decent size and brings toughness to the offensive side of the ball. He feels his strengths are crisp routes, speed, sure hands, and his physical play. However, Coby also talked about what aspects of his game he wants to improve on.

“I want to get better at everything really, because I don’t believe you can stop getting better at something. If I had to pick specific stuff, I want to work on my hands and work on my speed a little more.”

This season the Stallions turned a troubling start around and finished the season by winning the 1A State Championship. Coby never was discouraged by the slow start and his play picked up as the season progressed.

“It started slow because we started 0-3 and we were playing a lot of good schools. For me I just kept my composure and I knew my time would come. As the season progressed, I got better and my stats started showing that. By playoffs, I was playing at the top of my game. We just finished off the season and I got a ring.”

As a reward for winning that ring, the entire Stallions team was invited to watch this year’s Orange Bowl between Iowa and Georgia Tech at Land Shark Stadium.
