New In-State Offer for Lyons
February 19, 2010 by Luke Stampini
Dillard safety Wayne Lyons recruitment continues to grow landing new offers weekly. This week was nothing new for the 6-foot, 190-pounder, as Lyons landed a few more offers this week.
“I have new offers from Miami, UCLA, Purdue, and Maryland,” said Lyons.
The interesting offer is the local one from the Miami Hurricanes as they became the second of the in-state powers to offer the safety.
“It came in the fax today,” said Lyons of the Hurricanes offer. “I just got off the phone with Coach (Jeff) Stoutland a few minutes ago.”
Lyons and Stoutland talked about the new offer and the current state of the program.
“He was saying that usually players don’t really start getting offers until after spring football going into their senior year, so that’s what took so long for them to send mine or something like that,” said Lyons of his conversation with Stoutland. “But he was saying they really need safeties because they have good corners but real average safeties.
Lyons had positive things to say about the Hurricane program and the steps head coach Randy Shannon is taking down in Coral Gables.
“I think it’s a good school with a lot of tradition,” said Lyons. “I know Coach Shannon is trying to turn the program around.”
The Coral Gables campus is less than a 45-minute drive from Lyons’s home in Ft. Lauderdale, while Sun Life Stadium, home of the Hurricanes during the fall, is less than a 30-minute drive. The proximity of the school and their home field is something Lyons enjoys about Miami.
“It would be great to be able to play right down the street from home. My family would love that idea and I would to so everyone can see me play.”
Lyons is currently on his way to Tallahassee to visit for Florida State for their Junior Day this weekend. Miami is also looking to get Lyons on campus during spring football, which is right around the corner for Miami.
“They want me to come to a spring practice, but I’m not really sure if I will be able to make it anytime soon because of track season,” explained Lyons.
The new group of schools to offer Lyons joins the likes of Stanford, Southern Cal, Florida State, Ohio State, and many more. So how does everyone stack up?
“They are all even right now honestly,” said Lyons. “They don’t really stand out.”
