O’Leary Talks Schools, 7-on-7

February 26, 2010 by Luke Stampini

Dwyer tight end Nick O’Leary has proven to be one of the top players in South Florida with the toughness he brings to the field, along with his impressive strength and agility. The 6-foot-4, 230-pounder play on the field has landed him offers from numerous universities across the country, the most recent being Rutgers and Marshall. According to O’Leary though, despite claiming to be open to all schools, he admitted five schools were recruiting him the hardest at this time.

“Miami, FSU, Georgia, Florida, them right now, and Wisconsin,” said O’Leary on who he hears from the most.

The often-quiet O’Leary was blunt on what he wants in the program he decides to ink with come February of 2011.

“How they use their tight end and pretty much where I feel comfortable,” said O’Leary on the deciding factors in his college decision.

The transformation O’Leary’s body has taken in the past 12 months has been rather impressive. Always a decent sized player, O’Leary has added nearly 20 pounds, mostly in his upper body. He discussed what he has been doing to get to where he is not physically.

“Lift a lot, run a lot, and try to get as big as I can,” said O’Leary. “I’ve really just been lifting.”

This March will be competing in the New Level Athletics 7-on-7 on the campus of USF. The event will host most of the top skill players from across the state of Florida as well as top players from Alabama and Georgia.

“I’m looking forward to that. Pretty much all the kids calling me out, I’m going to show them up.”

O’Leary feels 7-on-7 benefits him as a player once the pads are strapped back on, and his explanation why gives a peak into the physical mindset he brings to the offensive side of the ball.

“I think he helps me getting open (in the fall), because there really isn’t much contact so you have to work on more skill.”
