Recruiting Frenzy Continues
April 15, 2009 by Luke Stampini
The recruitment of Pahokee defensive tackle Richard Ash continues to heat up after landing offers from Tennessee and Florida State last week. This morning the 6-foot-3, 263-pound Ash spent some time on the phone with a heavy hitter in the college football world and came away with an offer.
“I just got an offer on the phone from (Florida) Coach (Urban) Meyer,” said Ash. “He was saying that he showed my highlight to the whole staff and they loved it. They said they have a need for defensive linemen.”
Ash grew up a fan of the Gators and had been waiting for this offer for several weeks now.
“Oh, I was so excited because I always liked Florida,” said Ash.
With Ash’s childhood favorite coming through with an offer, it’s plausible a shift in his thinking of the recruiting process would occur. Ash denies any such thing.
“I’m still open, this doesn’t change anything. I still have to see what is best for me.”
Ash and Pahokee teammates visited Gainesville for an impromptu junior day held by the Gator coaching staff in February. The staff is trying to get Ash up once again this coming weekend.
“Coach G (Billy Gonzales) said he was going to talk to my coach about getting up there for the spring game,” explained Ash.
Spring ball is right around the corner and Ash’s recruitment is white hot currently, but there are still a couple more college football powers waiting in the wings. Southern California, LSU, and Notre Dame have all made inquiries about Ash in recent weeks.
