A great and an exciting 2009 season just wrapped up with the state championships in Orlando at the Citrus Bowl. From the first regular season game back in late August all the way until the final seconds of the 6A state championship game ticked off, players from all across Palm Beach, Broward, and Dade counties have put up impressive performances. SoFLAfootball will highlight some of those top performers with the SoFLAfootball.com All-Area Team.

Player of the Year

Greg Dent 2010 WR/DB Glades Central (pictured) - On team littered with talented players, Dent was always the go to guy in clutch situations for the Raiders. Dent consistently put up good numbers every week and showed the state of Florida how talented he was when he dominated the Muck Bowl against rival Pahokee. Dent finished the night with 185 yards receiving, returned a kickoff for an 84-yard touchdown, and scooped up a fumble late in the game.

Coach of the Year

Willie Bueno American Heritage-Delray - Bueno kept his team together after starting the season 0-3 against a tough gauntlet of games against Jupiter Christian, Cocoa, and Glades Central. Bueno rallied his troops to go on a 11 game winning streak that culminated in a 1A State Championship.

Offense

Quarterback - Jeff Godfrey 2010 Miami Central: The talented gunslinger completed 62% of his pass and surpassed the 2,700 yards. Godfrey also threw for 36 touchdowns to only 8 interceptions while leading his team to a 12-2 record.

Wide Receiver - Greg Dent 2010 Glades Central: The two-way playmaker hauled in 54 passes for 1,389 yards and 17 touchdowns on offense. Dent was also a standout on defense and special teams for the Raiders.

Wide Receiver - Tommy Shuler 2011 Miami Springs: After hauling in 73 balls for 1216 yards through a 10 game regular season Shuler proved to be one of the best in the area. Shuler also caught 17 touchdowns on the year.

Wide Receiver - Ivan McCartney 2010 Miramar: Due to the ball control offense and conservative passing game at Miramar, McCartney’s statistics may not be eye popping, but there is no doubt he’s one of the most talented in SoFLA. McCartney capped his season off with a 3-touchdown performance in the 6A title game.

Running Back - Jakhari Gore 2010 Columbus: Gore was the focal point of the Columbus offense and he still averaged over 11 yards per carry for over 1,800 yard on the ground. Gore also accounted for 29 rushing touchdowns.

Running Back - Matt Elam 2010 Dwyer: Finishing the year with just over 10 yards per carry, Elam rushed for nearly 1,900 yards. Elam rushed for 29 touchdowns, while being a standout linebacker on defense.

Offensive Lineman - Brandon Linder 2010 St. Thomas Aquinas: Linder’s talents helped open holes for 1,100-yard rusher James White.

Offensive Lineman - Calvin Smith 2010 Hialeah: This two-way lineman was instrumental in paving the way for 1,400-yard rusher Jerron Seymour. Smith was also a very effective defensive tackle for the Thoroughbreds.

Offensive Lineman - Shawn Brown 2010 Miami Central: Brown was the leader of what turned out to be a solid offensive line for the Rockets. Brown opened holes for 1,400-yard rusher Brandon Gainer and gave enough time for quarterback Jeff Godfrey to pass for 2,700 yards.

Offensive Lineman - Avery Young 2012 Palm Beach Gardens: Young moved up and down the offensive line during the course of a game playing both guard and both tackle positions. The Gators ran the ball behind Young most of the time.

Offensive Lineman - Leeward Brown 2010 Miramar: Brown was the featured lineman in an offense that grinded it out and displayed a 1,300 yard rusher in Jeremiah Hicks.

Utility - Darius Millines 2010 American Heritage-Delray: Millines carried his team to a 1A state title running, throwing from his quarterback position, and playing solid defense. Millines threw for over 1,000 yards and threw for nearly 800 yards.

Defense

Defensive End - Darrin Kitchens 2010 Homestead: Kitchens was a bolt of lightning off the edge rushing the passer for Homestead recording 19 sacks on the season.

Defensive End - Robert Way 2011 Glades Central: Way broke the single season sack record at Glades Central by registering 24 sacks on the season.

Defensive Tackle - Elkino Watson 2011 Booker T. Washington: Watson was tough against the run, but maybe even better against the pass as he seized 9 sacks on the year.

Defensive Tackle - Morris Moore 2010 Palm Beach Lakes: A versatile player for the Rams, Moore played both defensive tackle and defensive end, while playing a tackle spot on offense. Moore caused havoc during the game and was the leader of a stout Rams defense.

Linebacker - Vincent Mauro 2010 St. Thomas Aquinas: Mauro led a talented defense in tackles while also racking up 5.5 sacks and 16 tackles for loss.

Linebacker - Jamaal Bass 2010 Miramar: The heart and soul of The Dark Side Defense that keyed the state title run for the Patriots. Bass finished with well over 115 tackles on the season.
