SoFLA’s Top 35 for 2011
June 25, 2009 by Luke Stampini
SoFLAfootball brings you the Top 35 prospects for 2011 in Palm Beach, Broward, and Dade Counties. SoFLAfootball tackles the difficult task of ranking these prospects as they head into their junior season. This list will surely grow and change over the next several months as many more prospects are discovered this summer and next fall. As the countdown to fall camp grinds on, this should give you a good idea as to who the stars of tomorrow will be.
Every prospect on the list has been seen in person during a game, practice, camp, combine or 7-on-7 event. Several prospects were left off the list due to the fact we did not feel we had seen enough of the prospect to give a fair ranking.
********** Top 35 for the 2011 Class **********
1. Teddy Bridgewater (pictured) 6′2″ 175 QB/WR Northwestern: Bridgewater’s development as a passer last fall was eye popping. He is no slouch running the ball either. If quarterback does not work out for Bridgewater, he certainly has the tools to be an elite wide receiver in college.
2. Kelvin Benjamin 6′6″ 210 WR Glades Central: Benjamin proved to be a match-up nightmare with his size and athletic ability this off-season. He has shown the ability to catch the ball in traffic, something he struggled with last fall.
3. Wayne Lyons 6′0″ 190 S/OLB Dillard: Lyons shows the ability to fly around the field and make plays. He has good agility and will fill out to a nice sized prospect in the future.
4. Bryant Dubose 6′4″ 225 DE Northeast: Dubose came on strong at the end of the fall a season ago and carried the momentum into the off-season. He has continued to improve his pass rushing technique through spring ball and at camps. Dubose has good agility and speed for a prospect of his size.
5. Jabari Gorman 5′10″ 165 S Monsignor Pace: Gorman may be undersized, but his ability to make plays on both sides of the ball is hard to overlook. On defense, he delivers big hits and comes up with his fair share of interceptions. In the Spartans’ spring game against Booker T. Washington, Gorman was the best player on the field that night.
6. Charles Gaines Jr. 5′11″ 170 WR Miami Central: Gaines Jr. puts up big numbers in the Rockets’ pass happy offense with the help of his great routes, good speed and nice set of hands. He has also flipped over to defense in the past where he showed some talent as a cornerback as well.
7. Curt Maggitt 6′3″ 200 DE Dwyer: Maggitt is ultra quick off the edge and is a technically sound passer rusher. This off-season Maggitt added a great deal of muscle to his frame and looks to be on his way to becoming an elite defensive end.
8. Anthony Rabasa 6′3″ 210 DE Columbus: Rabasa is entering his third year as a starter at Columbus. He has a good motor and does a good job stuffing the run as well as rushing the passer. Rabasa was the best defensive lineman at Columbus this past fall that featured two other D-I prospects.
9. Denzel Perryman 5′11″ 210 LB Coral Gables: Perryman does not have ideal height, but has a muscular frame and excellent speed. His speed at linebacker is becoming a necessity with the influx of the spread offense in college football.
10. Nick O’Leary 6′3″ 210 TE Dwyer: O’Leary is a very fluid athlete that has great hands and superb body control. His frame should really fill out in college and he has good speed for a tight end.
11. Bobby Hart 6′4″ 260 OL/DL Cardinal Gibbons: Hart will play both sides of the ball for Gibbons this fall. He has a mean streak and is athletic for a kid his size. How Hart develops physically will be interesting to watch over the next couple of years.
12. Jesse York 6′0″ 175 WR Boyd Anderson: York is a smooth receiver that glides through his routes. He has good hands and a solid frame.
13. Jermaine Reve 6′0″ 185 LB Northwestern: Reve comes from the same mold as Sean Spence, a fast undersized linebacker.
14. Gary Wooten 6′2″ 185 LB Hialeah: Wooten has the frame and athleticism to be one of the top linebackers in South Florida. He still has to learn the nuances of the position, but playing 6A in Dade will put his play to the test.
15. Jonas Clark 6′0″ 175 S Booker T. Washington: Clark will be a three-year starter for the Tornadoes. He is yet another rangy athlete in the 2011 class in South Florida much like Lyons and Reve.
16. Miles Pace 6′1″ 230 LB Miami Central
17. Craig Wilkins 5′11″ 170 WR Hialeah
18. Davonte Allen 6′0″ 175 WR Glades Day
