Walker “Can Make Plays”
February 9, 2010 by Luke Stampini
Running the ball this fall for Gulliver Prep, Cedric Walker averaged over 13 yards per carry and finished with just less than 900 yards rushing. As affective as the 5-foot-9, 175-pound speedster was running the ball, Walker and his three interceptions on the season may be best suited for his other position, cornerback. Where he plays at the next level does not matter to Walker though.
“I play any one (position), whatever school I go to, it’s whatever they recruit me as I’ll play,” said Walker.
Walker has a feel for the cornerback position and proves tough for wide receivers to shake. He talked about what makes him such a talented corner and what part of his game he wants to improve.
“I got a lot of advantages a lot of people don’t have,” said Walker. “I’m a fast guy, I’m quick, I can defend guys well, I can play the ball well, I’m a play maker, and can make plays.
“As a cornerback, I’m trying to play the run a little better though.”
Walker’s play earned him an offer early in his junior season, his only one to date. The school was a local one that Walker knows well.
“I got one offer from FIU and that’s it. It’s a cool school and I talk to the Coach (Frank) Ponce sometimes. I just want to look at a lot of schools.”
While the Golden Panthers are his only offer, Walker states he is getting interest from several other programs.
“I’m getting letters from a lot of schools like Oregon, Tennessee, Oklahoma, Indiana, I get a lot of letters.”
This season did not finish like Gulliver Prep had hoped, bowing out of the playoffs in the first round to North Broward Prep. Walker is looking to finish what he was so close to his sophomore season at Gulliver.
“As a sophomore, I went to the state championships and lost, so I want to go back and win.”
Walker will be participating in the 100m and the 4×100m relay for the Gulliver Prep track team this offseason.
