Glade Central’s Kelvin Benjamin
January 30, 2009 by Luke Stampini
Out in Belle Glade this fall a young wide out started to put himself on the recruiting radar of college coaches. Kelvin Benjamin is hard to miss standing at 6-foot-6, 205-pounds, and what is even more impressive is at that size he lines up as a wide receiver for Glades Central.
The baby faced Benjamin if obviously still maturing, and probably makes the transition to tight end some time in the future. His upside has caught the eye of college coaches very early in the process as well, with Georgia and UCF both keeping tabs on the talented Raider.
When it is this early in the recruiting process it can often be a telling sign if a prospect rooted for a college growing up. Benjamin gave the corporate line, even it was unintentional, when answering that question.
“Not really, I’m a fan of anyone.”
Benjamin also went on to talk about some of the reasons college coaches are taking notice.
“My height, my hands, and my jumping ability are probably my best, but I got to work on my route running,” said Benjamin.
Benjamin summed it up very well in describing his play, often being Glades Central’s go to man in goal line jump ball situations. Benjamin influence on his teammates has also improved following the season he put together.
“I work hard every day, and a lot of guys look up to me because I was a sophomore and I saw the field,” said Benjamin.
Benjamin is a member of the basketball team at Glades Central currently, and looks to be joining the track team this spring.
“I’m probably going to run the 400 and long jump, high jump,” said Benjamin.
