Holliman Getting Early Looks

November 9, 2009 by Luke Stampini

Southridge’s Gerrod Holliman has made one half of the talented 2011 safety duo roaming the Spartan secondary this season. The 6-foot, 180-pounder feels his season has been a successful one to date.

“I feel as though I’m doing great so far,” said Holliman. “I have three interceptions and I ran two of them back in the game.”

While his two pick sixes on three interceptions are impressive, they pale in comparison to his junior teammate Andrew Johnson who has six interceptions, three of which he’s returned for touchdowns. The two have helped in the resurgence of Southridge this fall and has the Spartans 8-0 on the year.

“Our season is going great,” said Holliman. “We have a good team this year and we’re undefeated. With the coach we have now, Coach (Patrick) Burrows, he gives everybody the chance to play the position they want to play.”

Holliman played at Homestead his sophomore season before transferring over to Southridge this fall. His impressive play at Southridge has caught the attention of a few schools already.

“I get letters from UM, Kansas State, and Syracuse,” said Holliman who was invited to watch a Hurricane home game. “I went to UM, to the UM and Clemson game. I’ve talked to Coach (Randy) Shannon and Coach (Corey) Bell (Director of Football Operations).”

Holliman talked about some of the attributes he possesses that have garnered him the early interest from colleges.

“At safety I like to play the run first, I’m a run stopper. I’m good in man-to-man coverage too.”

Holliman and his Southridge teammates will look to continue their regular season success into the playoffs as their first round opponent is Miami Sunset in just under two weeks. They finish off the regular season this Friday facing Carol City.
