Maggitt Impresses at Camps

Every summer there is an upcoming junior that catches several college coaches’ eyes with strong showings at their summer camps. That is exactly what happened to Dwyer’s lightning quick 2011 defensive end Curt Maggitt the past few days.

The 6-foot-3, 197-pound speed rusher put his talents on display at two in-state camps, the first being Miami on Sunday.

“It was fun,” said Maggitt. “Coach Clint Hurtt, I spoke to him a couple times. He’s real cool, down to earth and I liked him a lot. He wants me playing for Miami and September 1st I should be expecting an offer.

“Miami is a real good program I like them. It’s a school everybody in Palm Beach likes. It will always be looked at because they got one of the top programs and a real good past and history.”

The second stop on Maggitt’s tour was to the defending national champion Florida Gators.

“Florida was a real good camp too,” said Maggitt. “I was excited to go there. Number one team in the nation, national champions, I wanted to see what their camp was like.

“I went up there ready, smiling, ready to have fun. I met Coach (Dan) McCarney, the D-line coach. . . Coach McCarney seems to love me I like him a lot.

It seems Coach McCarney is a fan of Maggitt’s speed of the edge.

“While I was going through the drills he gave me a lot of applauses and was telling everyone I did a good job. When we went to one-on-ones I was doing a good job getting back to the quarterback and he loved it. He kept calling me “Lightning”, he’s real cool.”

The ‘Canes and Gators are not the only school that are aware of Maggitt’s prowess on the football field. Iowa State, where Curt’s older brother Rose attends, along with Iowa, South Florida, Wisconsin, and Ohio State have all been in contact with Maggitt.

This coming weekend Maggitt looks to show off his athletic ability even more at a 7-on-7 event.

“I’m going to the 7-on-7 coming up, the Heath Evans (Foundation’s). I’m going to play outside linebacker, so that will be fun.”

Maggitt currently does not have any plans to camp at any other schools.
