Wilson Prepares for the Fall
July 30, 2009 by Luke Stampini
During the summer months, athletes across South Florida take part in a variety of off-season workouts to prepare them for the season that is closing in fast. Miami Northwestern offensive tackle Torrian Wilson goal this summer was to continue to lose weight, and took his workouts north to Michigan.
“I just went up to Michigan for about three weeks training,” said Wilson. “I was just in Saline, Michigan training with a trainer, Dr. Ping.”
Numerous NFL players and players with NFL aspirations have taken part in Ping’s workout at his facilities they refer to as the ‘House of Pain’. The training includes a variety of different workouts including exercises in the pool, unique weight training exercises, plenty of agility work, and continual resistance machines that use hydraulic resistance.
“The training up there was pretty much hard core training,” explained Wilson who claims to be down to 290-pounds. “I just wanted to go up there and get in shape and lose a few pounds.”
Wilson has made impressive changes to his body in the past year and talked why dipping below the 300-pound mark may be best for him now.
“I was already kind of moving quick when I was at 300 or 310 so I feel if I lost a few pounds I would be even quicker. I don’t think I have to be 300 pounds right now as a senior in high school. I feel 290 is a good weight for me.”
On the recruiting front Wilson is still not saying much other than listing what is an ever changing top five of Standford, Miami, LSU, Alabama, and Georgia. Wilson also denies the fact he is a silent commitment to the hometown Hurricanes, but a decision should be coming in the coming months.
A move to the guard is expected to happen for Wilson once he does get to college, but not everyone is ready to move him inside just yet.
“Most schools are recruiting me as an offensive guard. Some schools, one or two, are saying they are going to put me at right tackle, Stanford and Tennessee.”
Northwestern will now play Miami Norland in the Kick-Off Classic after the game against Pahokee fell through.
